Legal word processors are experts in the proper manipulation, formatting, styling and management of complex documents. It is imperative that you understand styles and how the application of styles differ in Microsoft Word and WordPerfect, including the differences between versions (Word 2000 vs. Word 2003, future versions, etc.). Formatting with styles, creation of table of contents and authorities, outline numbering, mail-merging and scanning and cleaning up documents are core tasks. In addition to Word or WordPerfect, you must be skilled with document comparison software such as DeltaView and document management systems such as iManage and DOCS Open. Legal and financial proofreading are two of the most difficult and profitable niche markets of proofreading to specialize in. To become a proofreader for DeltaForce you must be able to correct grammatical, typographical, and compositional errors in documents, but you must also have a full understanding of reads, redlining, blacklining, cumulative blacklining, citations, EDGAR, teamreading and slugging. Our paralegal/legal assistant opportunities span various areas of the law, including litigation, corporate law, criminal law, employee benefits, intellectual property, labor law, bankruptcy, immigration, family law, and real estate. As the law has become more complex, paralegal support has become more specialized, however general activities include researching and analyzing law sources such as statutes, recorded judicial decisions, legal articles, treaties, constitutions, and legal codes to prepare legal documents, such as briefs, pleadings, appeals, wills, and contracts. The role of legal secretaries has expanded in recent years, sometimes bordering on a hybrid of paralegal and word processor skill sets. Besides performing secretarial and administrative duties for an attorney, a great legal secretary will have strong word processing skills, including use of styles and knowledge of document management applications like iManage and PC Docs. PowerPoint and presentation skills can open additional opportunities. A four year degree is usually not a prerequisite for placement, but some college coursework is preferred. Document coders and scanners are essential to improving case management and document retrieval for law firms. We are currently looking for recent college graduates with sharp data entry and analytical skills to code and index documents from the phases of litigation, including client interview, case assessment, investigation, summons and complaint, discovery, pre-trial pleadings, trial preparation and trial and appeal. While previous coding experience is an advantage, many of our clients will train individuals on the coding and scanning process.
