Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the Human Across the Table

One of my investigators caught a claim recently that contained every green light one could ask for. The client’s system had scored it as low risk, clean photos, well lit, reconciling invoices, etc. The dashboard wanted to pay it.

Then the investigator spoke with the claimant. The story did not hold. The evidence had been built to pass the system, but she was looking at the person, and that is where it broke.

I led with that because this file says almost everything about the work. The technology found nothing. The investigator found the case.

We are at a real turning point, and I want to be clear about where I stand. We need the new tools. Fraud costs this country roughly $308.6 billion a year, and the methods used to fraudulently obtain insurance proceeds are evolving fast. AI can add damage to a photo, forge a report, or clone a voice. The old fakes failed on inspection. The new ones can pass it.

So yes, run the forensic tools: metadata analysis, pixel forensics, link analysis, deepfake detection. Machines can screen faster than any investigative team and turn a flood of claims into a smarter queue. That is their best use. They are a funnel, and a very good one.

The trouble starts when anyone mistakes the funnel for the decision.

In a touchless process, manipulated evidence can become a master key. Fraud was engineered to clear automated checks, so it clears them, scores low risk, and gets paid without anyone in the room to question the call.

That is where investigators matter. A true account carries the messy irrelevant detail real memory drags along. A constructed account is too clean, too rehearsed during expected questions, and too thin where it does not. Physical memory is never clean. You take the same event from the claimant, witness, shop, and clinic, and watch where the seams pull apart. The machine narrows the field. Closing the ground is our field.

The technology points. We decide! As these tools expand and improve, our value does not shrink. It sharpens. Keep training the read. Keep people across the table. Human judgment is still the irreplaceable center of this work, and no dashboard should ever override it.
