February marks Black History Month, a time to recognize and celebrate the profound contributions of Black Americans to our nation's history, culture, and economy. At Delta Group, we believe this observance extends beyond reflection—it's an opportunity to commit to building a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive future in the insurance industry.
A Legacy of Resilience and Innovation
Black History Month originated in 1926 as "Negro History Week,"created by historian Carter G. Woodson to ensure that Black Americans' contributions would be taught and celebrated. Nearly a century later, this celebration has expanded to a month-long recognition of achievement, perseverance, and progress.
Throughout American history, Black entrepreneurs and professionals have overcome tremendous obstacles to build thriving businesses and advance their industries. From C.C. Spaulding, who transformed North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Company into the nation's largest Black-owned business in the early 20th century, to modern-day leaders breaking barriers in risk management and claims investigation, Black professionals have shaped the insurance landscape in countless ways.
Diversity Strengthens Our Industry
The insurance industry thrives on understanding risk, protecting assets, and serving diverse communities. A workforce that reflects the diversity of the clients and communities we serve helps expand the effectiveness of the organization.
Diverse perspectives enhance problem-solving, improve decision-making, and help us better understand the varied needs of clients and policyholders across the country. When investigation teams, underwriters, claims adjusters, and fraud prevention specialists come from different backgrounds and experiences, we're better equipped to identify patterns, assess risks, and deliver fair, comprehensive service.
Moving Forward Together
Black History Month reminds us that progress requires intentional action. At Delta Group, we're committed to fostering an inclusive workplace where all team members can contribute their unique talents and perspectives. We recognize that building a truly equitable industry is an ongoing journey—one that requires listening, learning, and continuous improvement.
As we honor Black History Month, we celebrate not only past achievements but also the ongoing work of creating opportunities for the next generation of professionals. By embracing diversity and championing inclusion, we strengthen our industry and better serve the communities that depend on us.
This February and throughout the year, Delta Group stands committed to the values of equity, respect, and opportunity that make our industry stronger.
